Long story short, I sat there for hours and finally, after throwing a number of fits, shoveled them into my mouth and ran upstairs and spit them into the toilet. For me, a time that immediately comes to mind was the time my mom made cheesy scalloped potatoes and wouldn’t let me leave the dinner table until they were all gone. This is one of my favorite books! Perfect for ages 4-8, it was read to me at a teacher workshop on interactive read alouds and I have been using it in my classroom ever since! My first graders LOVE this book! I think just about every person, young and old, can remember a time in their own lives when they were forced to eat something they didn’t want to eat. “They have no idea what one tiny pea does to me.” As the pea barely touches his tongue, his transformation into a Veggie Monster begins! Fingers wiggling, eyes watering, toes curling, and ready to smash the chairs until… GULP, he swallows the peas. “Something terrible happens every Tuesday night.” It’s dinner time and the little boy is being forced to eat three whole peas. It combines humor, descriptive language, and dramatic effect to bring to life a completely relatable story to all veggie haters out there! Told in first person narrative with comical parents’-eye view interjections, Night of the Veggie Monster is sure to be a hit with children and adults of all ages.
